Three Free Games You Should Play Right Now

We are in a bit of a slower month for game releases.  It’s great to have another Shadow of the Colossus out and I like the idea of having a version of de Blob 2 to play on the Playstation.  The big new release this month is Metal Gear Survive, sounds like an unusual (at best?) experience.  If you’re like us, you’re probably saving your money for next month when we will have A Way Out, Ni No Kuni 2, and Far Cry 5 to pick up.  So, to help you save some money this month, we thought we’d recommend some titles that you can currently play FOR FREE.  Here are three free games you should play right now.

Doki Doki Literature Club

We’ve reviewed Doki Doki Literature Club before and I’m still amazed that this game is available for free.  As I said in the review, I am not a fan of dating simulators in which you have to romance various characters as a goal.  Doki Doki is not that game, it’s a game that’s using that familiar genre to provide a much more memorable (and disturbing) experience.  This is the kind of game in which the less you know the better, but I will say this: stick with it.  Doki Doki will try to convince you it’s just another dating simulator but it really isn’t.  Things start getting weird about an hour or two in, so it’ll take some patience but – trust me – it pays off.  By the end of the game, you’ll see why this title ended up on so many “Best of 2017” lists last year.

Yeah, she’s not kidding.

Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist

This clever little title by Crows Crows Crows (who made the extremely fun Accounting Plus) and William Pugh (who made the legendary The Stanley Parable) is definitely worth the thirty minutes it’ll take you to play through it.  Much like The Stanley Parable, the game explores the world behind the scenes of games and has fun joking about very familiar gaming experiences.  This is the kind of game you’ll want your non-gamer friends to play.  It’s funny, it’s easy to pick up, and it’s a brief enough experience that even non-gamers will enjoy it.  And if you liked this game at all, make sure you pick up both Accounting Plus and the Stanley Parable.  Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

This is my favorite narrator since Accounting Plus (actually, I’m pretty sure it’s the same guy).

We Were Here

We played through We Were Here a few weeks ago and we loved it.  Imagine a game that puts you in an Escape Room with a friend and challenges you to escape.  Here you play with an online friend and work together to solve puzzles and escape death traps as you work your way through a frosty mansion.  Sometimes you’ll have the clues and your friend will have the puzzles and sometimes it’s the other way around.  And the puzzles here are GOOD.  It’s amazing that such a fun cooperative experience is available for free.  If you like online cooperative experiences, make time for We Were Here (and think about picking up the sequel for just a few bucks!).

I’m not great at chess but I got by with a little help from my friend.
